Built originally for P&O as Assam. She never went to sea under that name and was renamed Caldera and ran under the flag of Pacific Line to South America.

After being sold to Laird Bros. She was chartered to Donald Currie and took two mail sailings to the Cape in 1877.

Among the passengers she took on her second voyage was Anthony Trollops, who, on completing his travels, published his well-known work on South Africa.
