Born Durban 22 December 1909, son of Henry Douglas and Julia Kate Walker. Educated Penzance Road School, Durban. Cadet Draft 1925-26.
On leaving General Botha, John Dennis Walker joined the Union Castle Steamship Co. and obtained his Master's Certificate in 1940.
He was lost at sea on 15 July 1942, when serving as Chief Officer in the Gloucester Castle, which was torpedoed off Cape Town.
(John Fisher #808 1935/36, has added this information: You show the Gloucester Castle as being torpedoed. She was actually shelled and sunk by the German surface raider Schiff28 Michel midway between Ascension and Capetown. She was lost on the evening of 15-7-42 Dennis was the Chief Officer. All the deck officers where killed (the Mast fell on the bridge), except the 2nd.officer. There were 64 survivors out of 154-vessel reported missing no knowledge of survivors till '43 in Japan Confirmed (information Union Castle Chronicle.)
