Peter joined the "Kenilworth Castle" for his first voyage whilst we were in Durban about November 1953, bringing our numbers up to six cadets. (all cargo vessels carried six)
'Van', he was never as far as I know referred to by his name Peter, was immediately popular as he was an accomplished accordion player, as Wallace Bradley another of our number was also South African and an ex Bothy Boy our repertoire was heavily into South African Bokke music!
Van was tragically killed in a motor bike accident whist he was studying for his 2nd mates certificate in Durban.
His mother was 'Jennie Post', widowed she had set up a factory making amongst other things tomato sauce,. a very popular brand in South Africa.
Van's uncle was the famous author Laurens van der Post.
