Edward Charles Palmer
From Mrs. Maureen Hakney 30th January 2007
Dear Owen Keen,
I was pleased to read in "Family Tree" March 2007 that you are adding names to a database of names of people who served on the "Union Castle Line" and take this opportunity to let you know of a "mystery" Uncle of mine who was reputed to have been a Steward on the "Edinburgh Castle" to South Africa. All I know about him is as follows:
Edward Charles PALMER (generally known as Bert) b.8.1.1902 in G.Yarmouth, Norfolk, father Charles Edward PALMER. mother Marie Palmer, nee Page. In 1910 the family were in Whately Road, East Dulwich, SE22, London. He is thought to have joined the Merchant Navy as a Steward and I have searched the records at Kew and have had a search through Cardiff, but can find no trace of him.
I have a photo of his wedding - this, again, I have had no luck in tracing, but it is said that he married a lady called "Fran", they had a son Tony, they separated and he died aged about 37/45 from tuberculosis. I cannot find a match for his death nor his marriage, despite extensive searches.
I should be pleased if you felt able to add this information to your database and contact me if you receive/have any further information.
Yours sincerely, Maureen Hakney (Mrs.) nee Palmer.
