Alan Lionel Smith
I hope you don't mind me contacting you but I have come across something that's very interesting.
My father sadly passed away 2 years ago and I'm just looking through some of his old papers and I've come across he's Merchant Seaman discharge book and I know its a long shot but there maybe somebody out there that might have known him.
My fathers name was Alan Lionel Smith and he joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 18 in 1951. Below are the dates of he's boarding and discharging.
Llangibby Castle....28/06/51--12/09/51,, 01/10/51--21/12/51,, 10/01/52--24/03/52.
Dunnottar Castle....09/05/52--24/07/52,, 12/08/52--22/10/52,, 07/11/52--22/01/53.
Capetown Castle....29/07/53--11/09/53,, 24/09/53--16/11/53,, 18/11/53--01/01/54,, 13/01/54--12/02/54.
He actually stayed in the Merchant Navy right up until 1959 but changed companies after he left the Arundel Castle.
His main duties on board were mainly saloon boy and assistant steward.
Also amongst he's papers I found a copy of "THE UNION-CASTLE LINE" book, a celebration in photographs and company postcards by Alan S. Mallet.
I really hope there's somebody there who may know of him, perhaps even have a photo of him, you never know!!
I hope this information is of help and I look forward to hearing from you
Mr. Paul Smith.
